Carrières des Lumières

Discover the unique and remarkable character of the place and reveal its minerals. The quarries were dug out over the years to extract the limestone.

Masterpieces are projected onto the huge walls, pillars and floors of the quarry. They transport you to colourful worlds with music. Over a hundred video projectors project images onto more than 7,000 m² of floor space.

Each year, Carrières des Lumières offers you an extraordinary experience by immersing you in the work of great figures in modern and contemporary painting.

A unique place, a magical atmosphere and a wealth of masterpieces!

Short programme
The Orientalists, Ingres, Delacroix, Gérôme…

In the 19th century, the gates of the Orient opened for Western painters drawn by the mysteries of faraway lands. Dazzled by the light of the Deep South, revealing the relief of arid landscapes and the colours of spectacularly patterned architecture, the Orientalists Delacroix, Gérôme, Ingres and other major names in European expression were captivated by these discoveries.

The Carrières des Lumières invite visitors on a pictorial expedition to the exotic and bewitching new world of the Orient these artists dreamt of.
