Midnight mass

24 December at 11.30 pm

Saint-Vincent Church

For over four centuries, midnight mass has been celebrated in the beautiful Saint-Vincent Church according to an unchanging rite.

Provençal Christmas carols are played on the galoubet and tambourine during the calendar vigil. During the mass, the villagers entertain the living nativity scene, surrounded by shepherds, arlésiennes, Mireilles and Baussencs in traditional costume.

The offering of the shepherds, called the pastrage, then takes place. Accompanied by drummers, the shepherds come in a procession led by the oldest among them, the bayle, to symbolically offer the last-born lamb to the Child.

The offering lamb lies on the straw in a small cart lit with multicoloured candles and pulled by a ram harnessed with silk ribbons.
