Yves Brayer – A new look

Until 28 December

In 2020, the Yves Brayer Museum is hosting a major retrospective of the works of this painter, a lover of Mediterranean countries, who was among the leading names in figurative painting in the 20th century.

Yves arrived in Provence with his wife Hermione in 1945. He discovered the powerful beauty of the exceptional natural surroundings and immediately set about painting landscapes composed of many shades of green, rocky ridges and the black trunks of olive trees. For several years, he adopted a paler, more harmonious palette before returning to brighter, stronger colours once more.

To mark 30 years since the artist’s death, this exhibition pays homage to this close husband and wife couple: firstly to the artist and also to Hermione, who died last summer. She was his muse, his model, his assistant and above all his constant support. The Museum now continues the work she started in his memory.

On the first floor is a new hang of paintings on Spain, Morocco, Italy, Travels, Provence and the Camargue. The second floor is devoted to major works from Provence and some important portraits of Hermione and nudes.
