Mondrian, the quest for abstraction

Until April 2024

To echo the programme of the Carrières des Lumières, wander freely through the work of the painter Piet Mondrian by walking through a dozen large format panels.

A Dutch painter and theorist, Piet Mondrian is known today for his fascinating abstract works constructed from straight horizontal and vertical lines intersecting at right angles and resulting in a sequence of quadrangular surfaces. Mondrian played an important role in the development of abstract art.

He is best known as the founder of Neoplasticism, an art movement that advocates rigorous abstraction through a quasi-doctrinal creative process.

This aesthetic vision is linked to the magazine De Stijl (“The Style” in Dutch) and the group of the same name founded in 1917 by Mondrian with his compatriot, Theo van Doesburg. Mondrian’s revolutionary and influential work helped to make abstract art a major form of artistic expression in the 20th century.
