Château des Baux-de-Provence
The Château des Baux-de-Provence extends over 5 hectares, and the whole site is a listed Historical Monument.
This year, the Musée Yves Brayer and the Mairie des Baux-de-Provence are paying tribute to one of the most influential artists of the 20th century, Jean Cocteau.
Writer, poet, playwright, film-maker and draughtsman, Cocteau left his mark on history through his unique ability to twist reality to plunge us into his dreamlike worlds.
Through more than a hundred works – drawings, photographs, film posters and plays – explore his dream worlds, myths and dreams, and let yourself be carried away by an artistic adventure that combines beauty, poetry and modernity.
Three main themes structure the exhibition, allowing visitors to discover the different facets of his work:
Les Orages: Through works such as Les Enfants terribles, La Voix humaine and Le Bel indifférent, Cocteau explores the torments of the human soul, oscillating between chaos and tenderness.
Les Enchantements: This section brings together major works such as L’Eternel retour, Le Jeune homme et la mort, La Belle et la Bête and L’Aigle à deux têtes, in which myths and the imaginary coexist to offer us a poetic look at human passions.
Through the Looking Glass: Le Sang d’un Poète, Orphée and Le Testament d’Orphée take us into a universe where the boundaries between reality and dream become blurred, a reflection on art, life and death.
The exhibition is enhanced by exceptional photographs by Arles photographer Lucien Clergue, who immortalised Jean Cocteau during the filming of Le Testament d’Orphée in Les Baux-de-Provence.
These intimate, striking shots plunge us into the artist’s private life, capturing his creative process and the magic of the location.
Finally, in keeping with its tradition, the Musée Yves Brayer is revisiting its permanent collections, showcasing drawings by Jean Cocteau in conjunction with works by Yves Brayer.
This rapprochement between two artists with singular universes offers a new perspective on their shared vision of art.
