Camille Claudel, géniale folie

12 May to 13 November 2022

In 1881, Camille Claudel, a precocious 18-year-old genius, came to Paris to perfect her skills as a sculptress with Alfred Boucher and then Auguste Rodin.

The meeting with the latter established an “extraordinary” relationship as pupil, model and lover, proving to be a decisive turning point in the destiny of the young girl who was twenty years younger than her master.

From the exceptional nature of their relationship were born works steeped in symbolism and modernity. At the end of the 19th century, the exclusively masculine world of art criticism acknowledged the talent of “Rodin’s pupil”, a qualifier that the artist fought her whole life long, emphasising her status as a woman artist.

Today still, the public tends to reduce her life to her failed relationship with Rodin and her committal. But that would be to forget the modernity of an artist ahead of her times who opened the way to symbolist and autobiographical sculpture with, notably, key works such as La Valse, l’Implorante, Les Causeuses, etc. (The Waltz, The Implorer, The Gossips).

It is the struggle of a lifetime, in a century where not much space was left for the woman artist, that the exhibition at the Yves Brayer Museum proposes to revisit by presenting some thirty works on loan from collectors and French museums including the Camille Claudel Museum.
