7 The Castle

Standing on a spur of rock in the heart of the Alpilles, the castle in Les Baux-de-Provence covers an area of 7 hectares and is one of the most majestic locations in France. It is also a Historic Monument. From the castle, there is a breathtaking panorama over Provence, from Aix to Arles and beyond. 

Thanks to the audioguides available in 10 languages (F, GB, D, I, NL, E, J, R, C, P), visitors can listen to the chaotic, tumultuous history of the Lords of Les Baux and their mediaeval fortress, as they visit the keep, the Sarrazine and Paravelle Towers, the dovecote, the castle chapel and the Chapel of St. Blaise, the former Quiqueran Hospital etc.

The giants of Philip Haas based on the works of Arcimboldo → from May to December 2017

In echo to the show of the “Carrières de Lumières”: “ The Fantastic and Wonderful World of Bosch, Bruegel, and Arcimboldo", 4 monumental sculptures of the contemporary artist and director Philip Haas are presented at the Castle. The Four Seasons are sculptures of more than four meters high, composed of plants, fruits and vegetables of every season, inspired by Giuseppe Arcimboldo’s paintings.

The “Estivales des Baux” (the Summery of Les Baux) → from 1st April to 31st August 2017, all weekends, public holidays and school holidays

On the program you will find several animations and workshops around trades and the everyday life in the Middle Ages. Discover also the arts of combat by shooting with the crossbow ballista or the shoulder crossbow, arming and shooting with the catapult. The weekend of 8th May (6th May to 8th May), of the Ascension Day (25th to 28th May) and the Pentecost (3rd to 5th June) additional workshops presnt you the fantastic universe evoked in the works of Giuseppe Arcimboldo and Jerome Bosch.

Secrecies of craftsmen → All weekends of September

With the Middle Ages, the artisanal production is essential to the survival of the inhabitants of the city and its prosperity. Rediscover the know-how of the compagnions at that time and compare to those craftsmen of today. Basket maker, weaver, rope makers, herbalists of the past, marquetry inlayer, glass blower, feather workers of the XXIth century share with you their craft and tricks.

The autumnal, Fantastic and Wonderful → from 27th October to 1st November

The fantastic and wonderful invest of les Baux-de-Provence. By traveling through different eras, follow the tracks of the fantastic imagination of the course of the centuries from the Middle Ages, via the Renaissance to the XIXth century. On the program, lectures in the form of tales and workshops about the legends of Provence, the bestiaries, alchemy or even astronomy.

Christmas in Provence → from 23rd December to 7th January 2018

Celebrate Christmas in the mysterious atmosphere of the Castle of Les Baux, tales and legends, songs and traditional music, cribs and pastoral… Gather in family to celebrate Christmas of Provence.
