7 The Château des Baux

Standing on a spur of rock in the heart of the Alpilles, the Château Baux covers an area of 7 hectares and is one of the most majestic locations in France. It is also a Historic Monument. From the castle, there is a breathtaking panorama over Provence, from Aix to Arles and beyond. 

Thanks to the audioguides available in 10 languages (F, GB, D, I, NL, E, J, R, C, P), visitors can listen to the chaotic, tumultuous history of the Lords of Les Baux and their mediaeval fortress, as they visit the keep, the Sarrazine and Paravelle Towers, the dovecote, the castle chapel and the Chapel of St. Blaise, the former Quiqueran Hospital etc.

Picasso in the open air → May to September
In parallel with the program Picasso and the Spanish Masters at Carrières de Lumières, the Château des Baux will host a photography installation on the theme of Picasso in the open air.


All about eggs… → 31 March and 1-2 April
Celebrate Easter in Les Baux-de-Provence! Eggs symbolise life and rebirth, and have been associated with the festival of Easter since ancient times. On a weekend, follow our original trail and discover all of the legends that surround this popular tradition. An Easter egg hunt will take place on Sunday 1 April.

To complement the engaging tour, experience activities which trace the history of the Château des Baux from the 20th century to the 21st century. Discover a thrilling epic tale about feudal knights, masters of arms and medieval craftsmen, the court of Francis 1 and the refinement of the Renaissance, and the Félibre poets of the nineteenth century. 
Demonstrations, mini-plays, commentary, an exhibition and anecdotes will combine to create a rich and varied cultural walk for all the family.

Autumn in Les Baux: Music! → from 29 October to 3 November
A 1000 years of history, and a thousand years of music. Listen once again to the sweet music of Les Baux and the many scores that have been played there: medieval music, luthiers, war symphonies and contemporary chanting. Over these four days, you will discover a musical and Baroque fantasia that will never cease to delight you.

Celebrate Christmas in the mysterious atmosphere of the Castle of Les Baux, tales and legends, songs and traditional music, cribs and pastoral…
